The artist, dressed in light summer clothes, looks at us questioningly with one blue eye and one green eye. For this self-portrait, Van Gogh used a cheap carrier cardboard on which he painted a layer of purple stripes. Unfortunately, the pigment has faded considerably over time and only vague pink stripes can be seen on the shoulders; Van Gogh's careful colour composition has been lost.
