This design is based on the painting Almond Blossom, which Van Gogh painted to celebrate the birth of his godson. It brings together a more subdued colour composition, with the famous almond blossom branches standing out on a grey background.
The subject, the sharp outlines, and the placement of the tree in the picture plane is evidence of the inspiration Van Gogh found in Japanese woodblock prints.
